Revealing the Truth
Children are perhaps some of the most innocent people. They base everything they know off of their own assumptions from observations or information others have told them. They trust that those around them are telling the complete truth. Unfortunately, everything they are told isn't always the truth - especially if it comes from a sibling. From my personal experience, older siblings tend to be the source of many false beliefs. One belief, in particular, went on for about a year of my childhood.
As a child, my older brother Collin was incredibly lazy. He would always ask someone else to do the simplest of tasks for him, like getting his shoes from the closet or grabbing him a water bottle. He realized the other members of the family were reluctant to do these favors for him. Desperate for a water bottle one day he told me I had an important task to do by the orders of the Disney Princesses. Obviously, I could not let down my idols. I jumped at the chance to impress any of the Disney Princesses and did the favor without hesitation. Since Collin realized this tactic worked so well, he began using it all the time. Regardless of the task I never declined because in my mind I wasn't doing it for Collin, I was doing it for the princesses, who I couldn't let down. After my parents overheard me claiming I was doing a task for the princesses, they began to investigate. As soon as they realized what was happening, they punished my brother for taking advantage of my willingness to do ANYTHING for the princesses. Of course, Collin may have stopped sending me on tasks, but every now and then my parents would reveal that the princesses NEEDED me to clean my room.
I laugh about it now, but as a kid, I wholeheartedly believed what my brother was saying. I was honored the Disney Princesses chose me to carry out their tasks. I remember feeling disappointed when my parents revealed to me that the princesses won't be reaching out to Collin anymore. I thought I may have done something wrong, but as I got older I came to the conclusion that it was just one of my older brother's schemes to get others to do as he says.
