The Community Elevator
This video begins with two people entering an elevator. The author made it immediately evident that these two people were very different. The older man on the right kept looking over and appeared to be judging the much younger girl on the left who was obnoxiously chewing her gum. The girl began to play pop music off her phone loud enough for the man to hear. in retaliation, the man played opera music off his phone. They both turned up the volume and the music was clashing as another woman dressed in business attire entered. She glanced back at both of them and then grabbed her advanced phone and played the music genre that she enjoyed. This pattern appears to repeat itself as the scene cuts to six total people in the elevator all playing different types of music on their phones. The elevator doors open yet again revealing a man with a radio on his shoulder. As he enters the elevator the others begin turning their music off knowing that a speaker will overpower their phones. The man puts in a tap but does something the others didn't predict- he pulls out headphones and plugs them in. The others around him smiled at one another. The scene ends with traditional elevator music coming out of a speaker in the top corner of the elevator.
This video was intended for anyone and everyone. The author did a great job having diverse characters that everyone can relate to. Depicted in this film are people of color, people of different religions, people with different styles, people of all ages, and people with different incomes. The only people that weren't included were children. I believe the purpose of this video was to observe the differences within a community and how we can learn to live together. I also think the author wanted to encourage and reinforce the idea of common courtesy. This video can teach the audience about community in several ways. The first idea the author portrys is that members of the community are diverse. The second idea is that these differences can cause chaos if people don't respect the differences between individuals. The last idea is that members of the community need to learn to adapt and live in harmony; instead of pushing their personal preferences on someone else, one should celebrate the difference between individuals.
