Spotting A Liar

When Meyer states that lying is a cooperative act means that both people have to participate in order for a lie to be successful. This means that the person being lied to has to truly believe what they are being told. I disagree with statement because in order for someone to lie to they just have to be telling me false information, I don't have to believe what they are saying. Lying is a way of connecting what we wish we were with what we truly are because we can lie in ways that make ourselves look better. When someone believes a lie that we wish was true it makes us feel as if that lie is a reality. One could lie about getting amazing grades when in reality that person is failing. The positive response of the person being lied to makes the liar feel how they wish they did, like they are doing well in school.

I agree with Truth #2. As a society we all condemn lying, yet we all are guilty of it. Sometimes we are put in situations where it's better to tell a white lie. For example, if a friend is immensely upset because they just got dumped, but they ask you if they look good at that moment. As you look at your heart broken friend with messy hair, tear stained eyes, and unbrushed teeth you decide that it's best to tell a white lie rather than add fuel to the fire. Almost everyone is guilty of lies like these, but people won't openly admit that they lie daily.

Some techniques to spot liars are looking for people who are overdetermined to get their point across, use formal phrasing,  distance themselves from the subject, or distance themselves from the topic. These are all verbal observations, but there is also certain body language thatgives away a liar. Some of these signals could be prolonged eye contact or less movement during the converstaion. These techniques are important to know because it will allow you to easier detect when someone is lying to you.

In my opinion, honesty is worth preserving. If we lose the quality of honestly, then all members of society would be on edge because they won't know who to trust. Creating a societal change regarding lying won't be easy, but I believe it's possible. We can start by making sure that we aren't spreading misinformation. We can make sure that we are doing our research instead of getting information from a Tweet or TikTok.
